1888 N162 Goodwin Champions Complete Set of Baseball Players (8)

Starting Bid - $3,000.00, Sold For - $13,800.00

Complete set of all eight baseball players from the 1888 N162 Goodwin Champions set, considered by many to be the single most beautiful of all the nineteenth-century tobacco issues. Six of the eight cards have been graded by PSA, and despite the range of grades, the set appears fairly uniform in overall appearance. Cap Anson Graded Ex-Mt 6 by PSA. High grade example of the key card to the set. Dan Brouthers Graded EX-MT 6 by PSA. Bob Caruthers Graded EX 5 by PSA. Dunlap (Pittsburgh) Graded EX 5 by PSA. Jack Glasscock Graded EX 5 by PSA. King Kelly Graded VG-EX 4 by PSA, great looking card downgraded due to its 90/10 side-to-side centering, and a tiny corner crease in the upper left. The Tim Keefe card has an Excellent appearance, but was rejected by PSA for grading due to evidence of trimming. Ed Andrews has a Vg-Ex appearance, with no creases, and was rejected by PSA for grading because it has a very minor stain along the top border, which is not visible to the naked eye, which PSA has interpreted as an alteration. It is our opinion that neither of these cards has been altered in any way, though we understand PSA's rationale for rejection. This set originates from the collection of Dr. Lawrence Kurzrok, a contemporary of Burdick and one of the early giants of collecting. The set was purchased in 1976, long before the era of card restoration, and has resided in the very same collection since its original purchase. A very pleasing complete set of one of the most highly regarded and sought-after issues in our hobby, with six of eight cards PSA graded, including particularly strong examples of key Hall of Famers Cap Anson and Dan Brouthers. Total SMR value for the six PSA graded cards alone is $7,300.Total 8 cards. Reserve $3,000. Estimate $5,000/$10,000. SOLD FOR $13,800.00
