1917 Joe Jackson Original Baseball Magazine Wire Photo
Starting Bid - $400.00, Sold For - $1,380.00
Original photograph (6.5 x 8.5 inches) from the files of Baseball Magazine features Joe Jackson proudly holding two large trophies. The original caption is still attached to the reverse and reads in part... "Here is General Joe Jackson, clean-up hitter of the Chicago White Sox, the new world champions. The larger cup is the latest edition to Jackson's collection of trophies. He won it at Boston recently by throwing a baseball 396 feet, in competition against the best long-distance throwers in the American and National leagues. He broke all records for throwing a baseball the farthest. The smaller cup is the prize Joe received for outbatting Ty Cobb in a critical series some time back. Joe was on his way home in Dixieland when he stopped long enough between trains to pose for this picture." An exceptional photo and a rare image of "Shoeless Joe" in happier times, basking in glory, just two years prior to the 1919 Black Sox scandal that ruined his Hall of Fame career. The photograph has the 1996 Christie's Baseball Magazine archives hologram sticker affixed to the reverse. Flawless contrast. Excellent condition. Reserve $400. Estimate $800/$1,200. SOLD FOR $1,380.00
