1948 Chesterfield Advertising Display
Starting Bid - $2,000.00, Sold For - $5,462.50
This extremely colorful cardboard advertising display is universally recognized as the premier baseball-related advertising display of its era, and one of the best baseball-related advertising pieces ever produced. The extremely high quality poster features portraits of Joe DiMaggio, Ted Williams, Stan Musial, Bucky Harris, Bob Elliot, and Ewell Blackwell, surrounding a large pack, each endorsing Chesterfield cigarettes. It is fascinating to note that, upon close examination, it is obvious that the players are not actually smoking. Chesterfield has simply cropped a cigarette into the mouths of Musial, DiMaggio, Elliot, and Harris. The poster has had some very professional restoration executed primarily along the bottom edge to restore it to its original state. This is extremely well done, and difficult to detect without specifically looking for the work. While the restoration will, of course, impact the value of the piece, it does not significantly affect its extraordinary display value. The poster has a magnificent Excellent appearance. The auction record for an unrestored example of this classic advertising display is slightly more than $50,000. Reserve $2,000. Estimate $4,000/$6,000. SOLD FOR $5,462.50
