1967 Topps Test Discs Complete Set Uncut Sheet (24)

Starting Bid - $1,000.00, Sold For - $13,800.00

From the golden years of Topps test issues, presented is a complete set of 1967 Topps Discs. This set of all-stars is known only in proof form, evidently intended to be pressed onto a pin-back button issue which never materialized. Printed on blank-backed silver foil, the discs each measure 2.25" in diameter, with a color portrait of the player surrounded by their name, position, and team. Offered is a complete set of 24 on an uncut sheet highlighted by Mantle, Aaron, Clemente, Koufax, Mays, Brooks and Frank Robinson, and Yaz to name a few. All known single examples from this set have all long ago been carefully cut from sheets. This set has always been extremely rare. We believe that fewer than ten sets exist in the hobby, and far fewer than that number have survived still in sheet form. Because of all the major stars in the set, over the years collectors have been motivated to cut up the sheets, to satisfy the demand for individual star players. There is an old saying: You can always cut up a sheet, but you can't put it back together. (OK. It's not an old saying. We just made it up). In any event, this sheet could also be easily cut up, but we would hesitate to recommend such a course of action, as we do not actually know of a single additional surviving uncut set. It is interesting to note that some of the portraits used in this set (such as Mantle) are the very same as those appearing on the 1968 Topps Test Plaks checklist cards. The sheet (14.25" x 23") has some minor wear at the edges, and is otherwise in Ex-Mt condition. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$3,000. SOLD FOR $13,800.00
