1921 Judy Johnson Cabinet Photograph
Starting Bid - $200.00, Sold For - $690.00
Sepia-toned cabinet photograph of Hall of Famer Judy Johnson in his rookie season with Hilldale in 1921. Johnson was a key member of the championship Hilldale teams of the 1920's. An outstanding fielding shortstop, he hit .391, .369, and .392 to lead Hilldale to three straight Eastern Colored League pennants in 1923-25. Johnson was player-manager of the 1930 Homestead Grays, leading them to the Eastern championship, and later served as the team captain of the 1930's Pittsburgh Crawfords, perhaps the Negro league's greatest dynasty. This photograph, which has been dated to exactly Johnson's 1921 rookie season based on the uniform style, originates directly from the family of Judy Johnson. An extraordinary original photograph of one of the Negro League's greatest stars. The cabinet card mount has been trimmed along the bottom, with some chipping in the lower right. A small portion of the "Mitchell of Wilmington, Delaware" photographers imprint is still visible in the lower right ("Mitch...") The actual photograph has exceptional clarity and detail, and is in Near Mint condition. Reserve $200. Estimate $400/$800. SOLD FOR $690.00
