1923 Havana Team Photograph with Martin DiHigo
Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $2,185.00
January, 1923 photograph (7.25 x 10 inch) of Havana team of the Cuban Winter League features the team in a traditional pose, and almost certainly includes the first photo of Martin DiHigo as a professional baseball player. DiHigo was 17 at the time this photograph was taken. He was not even listed on the early rosters for that year. DiHigo appears third from left, standing in the back row. Second from left is Cannonball Redding, in his Bacharach Giants sweater. Many top American black players played winter ball in Cuba in the early part of the century. Also included on this team is Pop Lloyd, in the middle, and on the far right in the back row, in the Cuban Stars sweater, is Pastor Pareda. Second from left, in the middle row, is future HOFer Cristobal Torriente. Also included are Dolf Luque, Mike Gonzalez, and Rafael Almeida, all Cubans who played in the majors. Box in the bottom center reads "Obsequio de La Discussuion, Enero 1923" which translates to "Gift of The Discussion, January, 1923." The photograph was apparently a premium issued by a newspaper by the name of "The Discussion," and credits the photograph to photographer F. Gilbert. Minor imperfections include some pinpoint surface blemishes, and a few very small edge tears. Exceptional photo quality. Very Good condition. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000. SOLD FOR $2,185.00
