1945 Buck Leonard Passport
Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $3,162.50
Buck Leonard's 1945 Passport. This fully executed passport has a special historical significance in that it was obtained specifically for use by Leonard as a member of the 1945 American All-Star tour team. This team included Buck Leonard, Jackie Robinson, Roy Campanella, Sam Jethroe, Quincy Trouppe and many other Negro Leaguers, that toured Venezuela in the fall of 1945, just following Jackie Robinson's signing with the Brooklyn organization. Leornard's occupation is identified in the passport as "Ball Player." Leonard has signed three times, all flawless signatures. On the "declaration of bearer" page, and on the passport portrait photograph, he has signed with his full formal name, "Walter Fenner Leonard." This is an extremely rare form of Leonard's signature. Below the photograph, Leonard has added a later in life "Buck Leonard" signature. The passport includes official stamps and imprints relating to the travel of the team. Accompanied by a single page (8" x 11 ½") official Venezuelan document, dated December 27, 1945, relating to Leonard's entrance to the country and referencing the passport, to which Buck Leonard has added a late in life signature in blue ink (fold lines otherwise Ex.) The passport is in Near Mint condition. From the estate of Buck Leonard. LOAs from Mike Gutierrez/GAI and James Spence & Steve Grad/PSA DNA. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000. SOLD FOR $3,162.50
