1948 Homestead Grays Final Game Buck Leonard Day Program
Starting Bid - $200.00, Sold For - $2,587.50
Two-page fold-over program commemorates Buck Leonard Day at Griffith Stadium on September 5, 1948. This was the Homestead Grays final home game appearance ever, in the final year of the Negro National League. Buck Leonard's portrait appears on the cover. He has signed the across his photo in blue ink ("10"). This was Buck Leonard's personal copy of this program, saved both as a keepsake of the special day held in his honor, and as a remembrance of the final day of organized league play for his beloved and once mighty Homestead Grays, one of the greatest franchises in the history of the Negro Leagues. We have never seen another program from this significant game. It is possible that few fans attended, and even fewer might have purchased and saved this fragile souvenir. As Buck Leonard himself has been quoted, after the color barrier was broken, "We couldn't draw flies." This is an extraordinary one-day style program, with a tremendous historic significance. 9 ½" x 6". From the estate of Buck Leonard. Slightly rounded corners and some very minor splitting along spine. In remarkable condition considering the fragile quality of the stock. Vg-Ex to Ex. Reserve $200. Estimate $400/$800. SOLD FOR $2,587.50
