1890 Chicago White Stockings Players League Team Cabinet Card

Starting Bid - $1,000.00, Sold For - $3,450.00

Extremely rare team cabinet card featuring portraits of the Chicago White Stockings of the Players League from 1890. The Chicago White Stockings were one of the top teams of the league, featuring Hall of Famers Charles Comiskey and Hugh Duffy, as well as numerous other big name stars such as Jimmy Ryan and Tip O'Neill. Cabinet cards of teams from the historically significant but short-lived Players League are practically nonexistent. This unusual composite team card features portraits in street clothes, with each player identified beneath his picture. Beneath the portraits, the team is identified by the caption "Chicago White Stocking B.B. 1890." This is a very unusual cabinet card, with a fancy deckle edge design, with gold leaf trim along the edges almost entirely intact. An elaborately designed advertisement for the J. K. Stevens Photography Studio of Chicago appears on the reverse. An advertisement for the Studio also appears on the front at the bottom of the mount. Close examination reveals a very fine surface tear running from the head of the top player to the top border, a pinhole in the top border, and a second pinhole in the bottom border, all of which have been professionally repaired. These flaws can be seen upon close inspection but do not significantly detract from the otherwise very impressive Excellent appearance. An exceptionally attractive, rare, and very significant nineteenth-century Players League team cabinet. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$3,000. SOLD FOR $3,450.00
