1919 Honus Wagner in Spring Fever Lobby Cards (5)
Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $1,495.00
Five different extremely rare and possibly one-of-a-kind lobby cards from a film entitled Spring Fever, released in 1919 and staring Hall of Famer Honus Wagner. Wagner appeared in only two films in his life, Spring Fever, and an early movie short produced by Vitagraph Studios in 1909. In Spring Fever Honus Wagner teaches a young boy the skill of batting. Incredibly, the young boy in the film was Moses Horowitz, who later became very well known as Moe Howard, of the Three Stooges. The cast of Spring Fever also included Moe's brother, Shemp Howard. Now really, we must pause for a moment, to contemplate the fact that the great Honus Wagner actually starred in a movie with two future members of the Three Stooges, long before this comedy team's formal debut. Fortunately, this did not lead to Honus pursuing a career in Stooge shorts, or today the entire history of the Stooges could be different, and kids everywhere might be familiar with Honus' comedic talents, at the expense of Curly or Larry. The five lobby cards show a variety of scenes from the film, including three with Wagner. The overall condition is Good due to soiling, pinholes, and edge wear. We have found no other examples of these rare lobby cards, and from our research it is safe to say that the film was not a hit. However, these rare movie advertising cards are a part of a long-standing tradition, in which many of the game's greatest stars have at one time or another taken a shot in front of the camera, responding to the call of Hollywood. These five cards were saved by Honus Wagner himself. They originate from his estate and are accompanied by an LOA from Leslie Blair Wagner (granddaughter). Total 5 lobby cards. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000. SOLD FOR $1,495.00
