Extraordinary 1933 Goudey R309-1 Babe Ruth

Starting Bid - $1,000.00, Sold For - $2,070.00

Graded NM 7 by GAI. One of the most pristine examples in the world of this very significant 1930s Babe Ruth card. This is one of several R309-1 Babe Ruths which, approximately 10 years ago, were sold by relatives of the printers for Goudey Gum, Inc. The family discovered a small group of Goudey-related items, which included a few sheets and advertising pieces. Also included were a small group of R309-1 Goudey premiums, in absolutely pristine condition, literally never issued, and each accompanied by its original mailing envelope. This incredible high-grade Ruth is one of those few very special R309-1 Goudey premiums, originating directly from the family of the Goudey printers. R309-1s were available only by mail in exchange for Goudey Gum wrappers. Printed on thick cardboard stock, the design includes a foldout cardboard easel attachment on the reverse which allows the card to stand on its own for display. The easel attachment on this example has never been unfolded. The card is accompanied by its original Goudey envelope, with Goudey Gum Co.'s return address on it, which was specially designed to mail the card. The envelope (graded EX 5 by GAI) has never been addressed, since it was never actually mailed by Goudey. The outside of the envelope reads "Please - Don't Bend or Crush. Photographic Print." The card has survived under the most ideal conditions, in a rare and extraordinary high grade, which is all the more impressive for this large-format 1930s premium issue due to its size and folding easel reverse. This is a simply extraordinary example in virtually flawless condition. The slightest hint of white can be seen in the right-hand corners, probably just from natural handling, but also quite possibly simply as a consequence of the production process. We grade this card Near Mint to Mint. Total 2 items (card and envelope). Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$3,000. SOLD FOR $2,070.00
