1942 Walter Johnson Signed Check
Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $1,265.00
Extremely rare large format check, dating from1942, filled out and signed by Walter Johnson ("8/9"). It was not until the past few years that Walter Johnson personal checks were finally released by the Johnson family. Prior to this, Walter Johnson checks were virtually nonexistent in the collecting world. In total, approximately 300 checks survived and have been sold by the Johnson family. They are all gone. Three hundred may sound like a lot, but it is actually a very modest number compared with the quantities of Ruth and Cobb checks which been absorbed by the collecting world. Of these 300 Johnson checks, fewer than 15 were large format in style. This is one of those few. The check has three vertical folds, and a single small, clean bank spindle hole, both common characteristics of cancelled bank checks. The reverse of the check has three bank cancellation stamps and has been endorsed by the payee ("Dewitt Zook"). LOAs from Mike Gutierrez/GAI and James Spence & Steve Grad/PSA DNA. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$1,500. SOLD FOR $1,265.00
