1868 The Game of Baseball by Henry Chadwick

Starting Bid - $2,000.00, Sold For - $10,350.00

Englishman Henry Chadwick was the preeminent American sportswriter of the nineteenth century. In 1868 he wrote this 180-page hardcover volume, entitled The Game of Baseball, (New York: George Munroe & Co., Publishers, 1868) which is one of the earliest histories of the National Pastime. This extremely rare volume includes rules and instructions for the game, profiles of many leading players, summaries of famous matches, box scores and other important historical information relating to the early days of the game, much of it found nowhere else. "The Chadwick Book," as it is often referred to by advanced collectors, is considered the cornerstone of all important baseball libraries. There are believed to be as few as a dozen copies in existence. The book is housed in a custom-made folding solander case. There is some wear to the covers, primarily in the form of some small areas of surface paper loss, as is almost always the case with this book due to its construction (cardboard hard covers, with paper overlay), otherwise the covers are clean and intact, the binding is tight, with only the slightest degree of separation along the spine, and all interior pages are in crisp, clean, Excellent condition. A superb example of one of the most important of all early baseball books. Reserve $2,000. Estimate $4,000/$6,000. SOLD FOR $10,350.00
