Circa 1910 Frank "Home Run" Baker Full-Size Decal Bat
Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $1,725.00
Full-size 33-inch Louisville Slugger 40 F.B. model decal bat features a portrait of Frank "Home Run" Baker surrounded by advertising for Louisville Slugger. These large decal bats are rare and have always been favorites with collectors. Baker earned his nickname as the hero of the 1911 World Series, in which he hit a game-winning home run in game 2 off of Rube Marquard, and followed up with another home run in game 3, off Christy Mathewson in the ninth inning to tie the contest. While not a prolific slugger by today's standards, Baker led the American League in home runs for four consecutive years, from 1911 to 1914, though he never hit more than 12 homers in a single season. "Home Run" was not Baker's only nickname, as he is also identified above his portrait on this bat as "Good Night Baker," another reference to his rare power at bat during the deadball era. The decals on these bats easily scratch and chip. This example has some general wear and some very, very minor undetectable restoration. The initials "GJ" are very neatly stamped on the barrel between the center brand and the decal. The center brand markings are very bold and crisp, and ideal for display. These bats can be challenging to grade, because ideally the decal and the bat should be graded separately. We grade the decal Vg-Ex. The bat is Ex. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$1,500.
