1940s Joe DiMaggio Hillerich & Bradsby Advertising Display
Starting Bid - $1,000.00, Sold For - $2,875.00
This large, colorful Hillerich & Bradsby advertising display features the "Yankee Clipper" going to bat for Louisville Sluggers. DiMaggio is illustrated in his batting stance, set against a large red circular backdrop, with the Louisville Slugger trademark below in gold. The base of the piece reads, "Users of Louisville Sluggers are Members of Baseball's Hall of Fame." Printer's marks are clearly visible along all four borders and it is likely that this was the proof for a large die-cut retail display. It is not known if this design was actually approved for use, and this may be the only surviving example of this particular advertisement. Several examples are known to exist of a different but similarly designed 1940 die-cut H&B advertising display featuring DiMaggio. The advertising display has several minor creases, and is otherwise in Very Good to Excellent condition overall. This piece was originally part of the Barry Halper Collection. It appeared as lot #2258 in the famous Halper Auction and sold for $3,450. Measures 20 x 39 inches and is framed to total dimensions of 24.5 x 43.5 inches. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$4,000. SOLD FOR $2,875.00
