1946-47 Propagandas Montiel Los Reyes del Deporte Near Set (152/180)
Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $2,185.00
Offered are 152 of the 180 cards which comprise this fascinating Cuban set issued with packages of Propagandas Montiel caramel. The set includes Major League ballplayers (both current and old timers), Florida International League players (Minor League), a handful of Cuban League players, a few wrestlers, as well as a selection of boxers past and present. There are few sets from any era which have more stars than this unusual late 1940s issue. The 15 Cuban League players in the set include 39 DiHigo (Gd with some paper loss to reverse), 48 Marsans (back paper loss otherwise Vg-Ex), and Luque (Vg). The former Major League greats, which make this set of great interest to so many, include #41 Babe Ruth (significant glue stain otherwise Vg-Ex), 42 Ty Cobb (light glue stain otherwise Vg-Ex), 57 Lou Gehrig (two small tears otherwise Vg), 65 Mel Ott (Vg-Ex), 56 Bill Dickey (light glue stain otherwise Ex), 70 Jimmie Foxx (Gd with stain), 79 Christy Mathewson (Vg-Ex/Ex), 73 Carl Hubbell (Ex), 59 Hank Greenberg (Ex), 60 Red Ruffing (Vg/Vg-Ex), etc. The current Major League stars in the set include #44 Ted Williams (very light glue stain otherwise Vg-Ex), 58 Joe DiMaggio (G-Vg), 76 John Mize (Vg), 71 Joe Cronin (Vg-Ex/Ex), 86 Rudy York (Vg-Ex), etc. The only significant current star missing is Stan Musial. Boxing greats include #1 John Sullivan (G), 2 Corbett (Vg), 4 Jeffries (Vg), 7 Willard (Vg), 15 Louis (Vg-Ex with some paper loss to reverse), etc. Card numbers 100 through 180 are of a slightly different design, with player names on front, and feature Florida International League players (from teams such as Havana Cubans, Miami Sun Sox, Club Tampa, etc.). Condition: These cards were meant to be glued into an album, and that is how most cards have been saved. Because of this, cards from this set are rarely found in better than Vg condition. Many of these cards have been carefully removed from an album and have glue stains (sometimes very light) and some cards have a little paper loss to the reverse (although this is a problem with relatively few cards in this group). These condition problems "come with the territory" for this issue. The collection includes 85 cards between numbers 1-100, and 67 cards between numbers 101-180. The 85 first series cards (numbered 1 through 100) range in grade from Good to Vg-Ex, with a few cards in lower grades, and a few cards better. The 67 high number cards of the group (numbered 101 through 180 and which feature Florida International League players) grade Vg-Ex to Ex overall, with just a few in lesser grade, and with only very light glue marks on reverses. To the best of our knowledge, this is the largest group of Propagandas Montiel caramel cards to ever be offered at auction. We have never before seen a complete or near complete set of this issue offered in any condition. This is due both to the genuine scarcity of the issue and the fact that numerous stars have always encouraged the breaking up of groups when they do surface, making this near set offering a very rare and significant collecting opportunity. The numerous stars and Hall of Famers give this collection a tremendous break value. Total 152 cards. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,500/$2,500. SOLD FOR $2,185.00
