1924 Kansas City Monarchs Panorama

Starting Bid - $4,000.00, Sold For - $8,050.00

Incredible panoramic photograph features the legendary 1924 Kansas City Monarchs. The Monarchs were one of the Negro League's greatest teams, especially in the 1920s, which were the early years of the Negro National League. The Monarchs were charter members of the Negro National League. Led by stars such as "Bullet Joe" Rogan and Joe Mendez, they won the pennant in 1923, 1924, 1925, and 1926, making them by far the dominant Negro League team of the era. All players are identified in white lettering beneath their feet in the foreground as follows: Marshell, McNair, Joseph, Morris, Johnson, Allen, Rogan, Mendez, Moore, Hawkins, W. Bell, C. Bell, Mothell, Duncan, Drake, Sweatt, and Bartlett. The photographer is identified in the lower right corner ("Photo by J.E. Miller"), also in white lettering. In their key 1920s Championship years, the Kansas City lineup remained almost unchanged, but we have been able to precisely date this team to exactly 1924, because pitcher Harold Morris (4th from the left) was with the Monarchs only in 1924. This is especially significant, as 1924 was the first year of the Negro League World Series. The Kansas City Monarchs were the winners of that first Negro League World Series, giving this extraordinary early panoramic team photograph all the more historical significance and distinction. All Negro League panoramic photographs are extremely rare and desirable, but it would be hard to top this museum-caliber example of the legendary Kansas City Monarchs, the greatest of all Negro League teams of the era, dating from their most important season as the first Negro League World Champions. Photograph measures an impressive 7 x 35 inches. Beautifully matted and framed. Frame measures 41 x 13.5 inches. Crisp and clean, and with exceptional contrast and clarity. Interlocking "KC" Kansas City Monarchs' uniform patches are easily seen on each players' left sleeve, with the exception of the two end players (Marshell and Bartlett) who are each wearing a different style Monarchs uniform with the Kansas City Monarchs' monogram on the front of their jerseys. Extremely close examination reveals a few very minor faults (a small tear in the lower right, no paper missing, two small stains, affecting Morris' pants and head, and a very small surface chip on Rogan's left knee). Otherwise in remarkable Excellent to Mint condition. This is one of the best Negro League panoramic photographs in existence. Reserve $4,000. Estimate $8,000/$12,000. SOLD FOR $8,050.00
