Extraordinary collection of 19 different letters/notes by Negro League stars, written to Negro League historian John Holway, highlighted by correspondence from all eight Negro Leaguers who are currently members of Baseball's Hall of Fame. Includes: 1) Willie Wells (one-page ALS dated 9/12/73). 2) Norman T. Stearnes (Turkey, ANS on Holway's letter dated 1/3/73). 3) Hilton Smith (one-page ALS dated 7/18/79 signed "Hilton," in part "I wish I could sue them for $50,000..."). 4) James "Cool Papa" Bell (one-page ALS, in part "A black man cant (sic) aford (sic) to tell the trouth (sic)"). 5) Walter "Buck" Leonard (one-page ALS dated 9/17/70). 6) William "Judy" Johnson (one-page dated 2/24/70) on Phillies stationery with Johnson's return address label affixed. 7) Ray Dandridge (one-page TLS dated 3/25/72) on Dandridge's personal stationery with portrait in upper left. 8) Monte Irvin (one-page TLS on official "Office of the Commissioner" stationery signed "Monte" and dated 11/21/83). 9) Effa Manley (TLS dated 1975; there is a good chance that Manley will be the first woman to make the HOF). 10) Dave Malarcher (2-page ALS dated 11/30/72 and mentions John Donaldson, "Bingo" DeMoss, Wiilie Foster, "Dizzy" Dismukes, etc.). 11) Chester Brewer (one-page letter written in another hand and signed by Brewer). Chet Brewer will very likely be elected to the Hall of Fame in the future. 12) Geo. A. Sweatt (one-page TLS dated 1974). 13) Jesse Hubbard (one-page ALS). 14) James C. Greene (one-page TLS signed "Joe Greene," he mentions Jackie Robinson and Hilton Smith, among others). 15) Geo. Giles (one-page ALS). 16) Wilmer Fields (one-page ALS signed "Wilmer" comes with the mailing envelope containing a full-name Fields signature as part of the return address). 17) W.P. Drake (one-page ALS in which he mentions "Cool Papa" Bell). 18) William Cash (One-page TLS). 19) Larry Brown and Verdell Mathis (one-page ALS by Brown, signed also by Mathis, as they lived together at the time). Overall, the signatures grade a "9" and the letters are in Near Mint condition. This is an incredible collection, with fabulous content, of letters written by rare and marquee Negro League figures, to John Holway, who is one of the most noted of all Negro League baseball historians. This is a very significant and unique collection with many highlights and rare signatures. Total 19 items. LOAs from Mike Gutierrez/GAI and James Spence & Steve Grad/PSA DNA and Kevin Keating/QAMV.
