1962 Willie Mays All-Star Game-Used Bat With Letter From Mays
Starting Bid - $5,000.00, Sold For - $13,800.00
One of the greatest players to ever take the field, Willie Mays had a spectacular Hall of Fame career which included appearances in a record 24 All-Star games. This Hillerich & Bradsby model M63 bat was issued to Mays for use in the 1962 All-Star game, played at Chicago's Wrigley Field on July 30, 1962. The bat is uncracked and shows evidence of use with black ball marks on the barrel. The front barrel, around the barrel stampings, has a few specks of white paint. All-Star game bats are extremely desirable both for their rarity (only two were produced for each player specifically for use in the All-Star game), and because their unique design dates each All-Star bat with certainty to a specific year and game. This is an extraordinary bat on many counts. Perhaps most important, this bat is accompanied by a letter from Willie Mays on Giants stationery which reads as follows: "1962 Game-Used Willie Mays All Star Bat - Chicago, To Whom It May Concern: I have personally inspected this bat and deem it to be authentic as used by me. The bat is my official Louisville Slugger 1962 All-Star Game model bat. It is my custom M63 model. The bat is the length and weight I preferred. The bat shows much game use from National League ball marks after connecting for a couple of hits. The bat is properly marked and 100% unaltered and original. This is a very special bat and worthy of any first class baseball collection. Sincerely, (signed) Willie Mays." Mays collected two hits in two at-bats in the 1962 All-Star Game at Chicago. All All-Star bats are highly sought after by collectors, but an example from Willie Mays with an accompanying letter from Mays is a special prize. The fact that the year of the bat is 1962 is also of great significance, not just because this was a great year for Mays in which he led the majors in home runs with 49, scored 130 runs, collected 141 RBIs, and hit .304, but also because this was one of only three seasons in which Mays led the Giants to the pennant. This is one of the most significant Mays bats in existence. This extraordinary bat has never before been available at auction. Length: 35 inches. Weight: 33 ounces. SCD Authentic Grade: A10. LOAs from Dave Bushing & Dan Knoll/SCD Authentic and John Taube & Vince Malta/PSA DNA. Reserve $5,000. Estimate $10,000/$20,000. SOLD FOR $13,800.00
