1952 Bowman Baseball Proofs (9)

Starting Bid - $200.00, Sold For - $1,035.00

Collection of nine 1952 Bowman production proof cards. These production proofs, each measuring the same size as the larger format 1953 Bowmans (2.5 x 3.75 inches), feature the same images which appear on 1952 Bowmans, but in black and white, with a slightly glossy surface sheen, and no player signature as appears on the issued 1952 cards. All examples of these proofs originated many years ago from the files of Bowman's George Moll. It is not known specifically what their purpose was, but they were either early design production samples for 1952 Bowman baseball, or an alternative design-format prototype from late in 1952 which led to the issued design of 1953 Bowman. Included are the following proofs: two examples of Max Surkont (both Ex and both with handwritten Bowman notations on reverse which read "Max Surkont Boston Braves 1952 #12"), Early Wynn (Gd due to glue stain lower right), Al Dark (Gd due to glue stain lower right), Bob Hooper (small surface chip, glue marks, reverse notations), two Fred Hutchinson (both with small glue stains otherwise Ex), two of St. Louis Browns player who does not appear in the 1952 set (both with stain and minor spots of paper loss in upper left). Glue stains are not unusual on these 1952 Bowman proofs, and relate to their original use by Bowman. Interesting group of nine unusual and rare Bowman production design proof cards. Total 9 cards. Reserve $200. Estimate $500/$1,000. SOLD FOR $1,035.00
