1800 John Adams Land Grant Signed As President
Starting Bid - $1,500.00, Sold For - $4,025.00
Partially printed land grant document (12" x 14") signed by John Adams (1735-1826), second President of the United States, is dated September 2, 1800. The official government document (12 x 14 inches) grants a parcel of land to a Mr. Alexander Spotswood, who was a colonel in the Virginia Line on Continental Establishment, in lieu of currency and in consideration of his military service. The document, printed and handwritten on parchment, has been officially signed in black ink along the bottom by the President, "John Adams" ("7") and Secretary of State, "J. Marshall" ("7"). In the lower left corner is the embossed white Seal of the Presidency, which is complete, essentially perfect, and fully intact. This very elaborate and important element is often damaged or missing from documents of this era, making this an exceptional example. Adams signed this document during the final year of his only term as President. He lost the election of 1800 to his Vice President, Thomas Jefferson, just two months later. Adams was one of the most important figures in American politics in the formative years of our nation. In addition to being the second President of the United States, he served as a member of the Continental Congress from 1774 to 1778, and for two terms served as the Vice President under George Washington (1789-1797). Adams was also one of only two signers of the Declaration of Independence to later serve as President (the other being Jefferson). The document has some slight natural toning and fold lines (one vertical and two horizontal), as is usually the case with Land Grants from this era, and is otherwise in Excellent condition. This is an ideal for display document, signed by John Adams as President, during his final year in office. Beautifully and very expensively matted and framed, together with a print of Adams and a descriptive plaque, to dimensions of 24 x 28 inches. LOA from James Spence, Steve Grad and John Reznikoff/PSA DNA. Reserve $1,500. Estimate $3,000/$5,000. SOLD FOR $4,025.00
