1904 "TR At The Gate" Classic Political Pin
Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $4,025.00
Technically low-grade example of what is universally regarded as one of Political Collecting's most desirable celluloid campaign pins. The extremely colorful design features Uncle Sam putting up a third section of a fence labeled "Prejudice" while Teddy Roosevelt looks on. The other two sections of the fence are labeled "Lawlessness" and "Injustice." This is certainly one of the most well designed campaign pins ever produced, and it is easy to see why it has always been held in such high esteem by collectors. It is also exceedingly rare, with almost certainly fewer than 20 examples known to exist. The offered example, which once resided in the legendary collection of Dr. Morton H. Rose, has numerous very fine surface cracks which by definition make the example low grade. However, these cracks are extremely fine and are not immediately apparent if the viewer is not looking for them, or looking at the pin in the light at the correct angle. The colors are brilliant, as bright and crisp as a high-grade example, and the presence is far superior to what the low grade designation might suggest. In fact, the overall appearance has much in common with an example of a much higher grade. No fading. Tight collet. No staining. No rust. A rare and presumably relatively affordable example of this classic in a low but still very pleasing and desirable collection-worthy condition. Past sale records for this pin in high grade exceed $15,000. Diameter: 1.5 inches. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$1,500. SOLD FOR $4,025.00
