1917 James Montgomery Flagg "Uncle Sam" Poster

Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $2,875.00

The classic Uncle Sam WWI-era recruiting poster presenting the definitive image of Uncle Sam by noted illustrator James Montgomery Flagg. Flagg created more than 40 patriotic posters for the war effort. This rare Uncle Sam poster is by far the most famous of all Flagg posters, and of all WWI recruiting posters. Professionally dry mounted on board, the poster is ready for framing. With its tremendous dimensions of 30 x 40 inches, beautiful and vibrant colors, and striking design, it is especially ideal for display. Flagg's distinctive signature appears in the bottom right. "Copyright 1917, Leslie-Judge Co., N.Y." appears along the bottom border. Flagg's rendition of Uncle Sam is a timeless and instantly recognizable image representing America, and in 1961 was adopted by Congress as an official national symbol. The poster has an Excellent appearance, but close examination reveals minor imperfections including some minor creasing where it was once folded for storage, and some very light crayon writing (barely visible) along the bottom margin. These flaws are minor and do not significantly detract from its otherwise extremely impressive Excellent appearance. Exceptional original example of this extremely famous poster, featuring an enduringly classic American image, with flawlessly bold colors. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000. SOLD FOR $2,875.00
