James Montgomery Flagg Illustration Art
Starting Bid - $400.00, Sold For - $1,265.00
Offered is an extraordinary poster-sized (21 x 29 inches) original illustration by noted American illustrator James Montgomery Flagg. Executed in ink on thin board, this appears to be an illustration produced for a magazine, although the extremely large size suggests that it may have been created for use as poster illustration. The scene features an overwhelmed housewife, wrestling with a mountain of laundry and a small child, who can get no help from her apathetic teenage son. Some things never change! The illustration is captioned above, "You know I'd help you, on'y we'd both go t' jail if I did." The mother's expression perfectly captures her frustration with her lazy son. Flagg is best known for his illustrations of Uncle Sam featured in patriotic posters produced during the First World War, and is highly regarded by scholars for all of his substantial contributions to the world of American Illustration Art. The work is signed "James Montgomery Flagg" in the lower left. A fine example of illustration art from one of America's finest and most famous illustrators. A small chip above the "d" is mentioned for the sake of accuracy, otherwise in overall Excellent condition. Reserve $400. Estimate $800/$1,200. SOLD FOR $1,265.00
