1885 Mark Twain Signed Cabinet Card
Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $1,150.00
Professional studio photographer's cabinet card features a striking likeness of Mark Twain, and is beautifully signed and dated on the reverse. The 4.5 x 6 inch mount has been signed on the verso in large, bold, black ink: "Sincerely Yours/S.L. Clemens/Mark Twain/Feb. 13, 1885" ("9"). Mark Twain's real name was Samuel Langhorne Clemens. Twain-signed items such as this, featuring both forms of his name, are especially highly prized by collectors. Twain signed this photograph just a few months before the publication of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, sequel to the popular Tom Sawyer. The photograph is very clean, front and back, and the signatures and inscription are crisp and bold. Beautifully framed to total dimensions of 11.5 x 15.5 inches, with a double-sided window allowing both the front and reverse of the cabinet card to be viewed, and framed along with a color copy of the photograph so that the signed reverse may be viewed side-by-side with the color copy for display purposes. This is a tremendous signed cabinet card of one of America's greatest and most legendary authors. Excellent condition. LOA from James Spence, Steve Grad and John Reznikoff/PSA DNA. Reserve $500. Estimate $800/$1,200. SOLD FOR $1,150.00
