1932 Lindbergh Baby Kidnapping Poster

Starting Bid - $800.00, Sold For - $1,610.00

Extremely rare official post office reward poster (15 x 21.5 inches) seeking information relating to the 1932 Lindbergh Baby kidnapping. This is the only example of this extraordinary "$25,000 Reward" announcement we have ever seen, and it is possible this is the only surviving example, as so far we have yet to find anyone who has seen or heard of another. This poster is a "Confidential Notice To All Postal Employees," intended only for the eyes of postal employees who, in the course of their work, might be able to spot handwriting similar to the illustrated specimens, which might lead to the arrest of the persons involved in the crime. Other known Lindbergh posters, while rare, were produced for the general public, and received far greater distribution, thus perhaps explaining the far greater rarity of this design. The poster reads in part: "CONFIDENTIAL NOTICE/$25,000 REWARD $25,000/For information leading to the arrest and conviction of the persons involved/in kidnapping and murder of/CHARLES A. LINDBERGH, JR.../Reproduced below will be found copies of envelopes addressed by the persons involved.../This circular is for the information of Postal Employees ONLY.../Any employee who observes any handwriting which he thinks is similar to any of the above specimens will kindly report the matter to his superintendent at once...C.H. Clarihan/Post Office Inspector in Charge/...New York City." Illustrated are "copies of envelopes addressed by persons involved in the Lindbergh kidnapping, also specimens of handwriting in notes sent by the kidnappers." The "confidential" nature of this poster, its exceptional design, and its large size, combine to make it a most impressive and dramatic visual display. The poster has an Excellent appearance, especially framed, though close examination reveals a number of imperfections including one vertical and several horizontal folds incurred in filing, some tearing including a large horizontal separation (may have tape repair on reverse), and some mild creasing at the top from handling. While technically not in high grade, these flaws do not significantly detract from the extraordinary visual appeal of the poster. An extremely rare and substantial museum-worthy reward poster from the true "Crime of the Century." Beautifully framed to total dimensions of 23 x 30 inches. Reserve $800. Estimate $1,500/$3,500. SOLD FOR $1,610.00
