Neil Armstrong Signed Apollo 11 Photo Display

Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $6,325.00

At 10:56 PM EDT on July 20, 1969 Neil Armstrong made history as the first man to set foot on the surface of the moon. Minutes later, Buzz Aldren followed as the second man to set foot on the moon. Offered here is a photographic display, featuring four separate images of that historic event, signed beneath by Armstrong. The photographs feature Buzz Aldren, stepping onto the lunar surface during the Apollo 11 mission, as taken by Neil Armstrong while on the moon. The signed display is actually a proof page from a book proposal by Allan Sanford of New York. Seeking Armstrong's approval to publish a limited-edition book, Mr. Sanford prepared a dummy version of the book and met with Armstrong in Dayton, Ohio in 1977 to personally review the project with Armstrong. At this meeting, Sanford asked if Armstrong would sign one of the pages for him as a keepsake. Armstrong chose this page, and signed the white backing below the photos as follows: "To Allan Sanford-/With the best wishes of the Photographer/Neil Armstrong/Apollo 11" ("10") in bold, blue ballpoint. Serious collectors have long had no choice but to accept that Neil Armstrong is one of the most elusive signatures of the twentieth century. His well-known reluctance to sign makes this rare salutation and signature all the more significant, especially as it relates directly to images taken by himself from the historic Apollo 11 mission, and identifies himself as the photographer. The photos themselves are attached as a single block of four, and together measure 8 x 7.5 inches. The backing is heavy white paper mounted on a very study Styrofoam board (9.5 x 11.5 inches). An ideal and extremely rare signed Armstrong display directly relating to Apollo 11. Near Mint condition. LOA Allan Sanford. LOA from James Spence, Steve Grad and John Reznikoff/PSA DNA. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000. SOLD FOR $6,325.00
