4/18/70 Andy Warhol Signed Bank Check
Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $575.00
Extremely rare Andy Warhol signed bank check, dated April 18, 1970, drawn on the Chemical Bank account of the corporation Lonesome Cowboys, Inc. Filled out entirely in Andy Warhol's hand, the check is made payable to "Bill Bike" in the amount of $30.00 and is signed in blue ballpoint "Andy Warhol" ("9.") Warhol has crossed out the preprinted street address of Lonesome Cowboys, and added the new street address by hand. This is the first Andy Warhol check we have ever seen or heard of in the collecting world. The check is not cashed, which provides an explanation for its survival. One of the pioneers of Pop Art, Warhol's extraordinary output and groundbreaking artistic sensibility had a profound impact on our culture, and how we look at art. Warhol's "Dollar Sign" series may give this check an additional relevance to some, inviting interpretation of the check itself as a work of art, though we realize that even the mention of this concept is a risk. Warhol would be proud. The check shows some toning, and a light circular watermark appears in the area of the date. On the reverse is a piece of tape, and the outline of a second piece which is no longer there, apparently from at one time being framed or mounted in a scrapbook. This is a rare find in the world of check collecting. Very Good condition. LOA from James Spence, Steve Grad and John Reznikoff/PSA DNA. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000. SOLD FOR $575.00
