Original Kenneth Smith Cover Painting for 1971 Eerie Yearbook

Starting Bid - $1,000.00, Sold For - $1,840.00

Original cover art by Kenneth Smith for the 1971 Eerie yearbook edition, features one of Kenneth Smith's trademark creatures, clearly from another world, apparently running away from danger. His expression registers unmistakable terror, and the alien figure seems poised to jump right out of the painting. Few fantasy artists can create a whole nether world more effectively than Kenneth Smith, whose distinctive style is instantly recognizable, and a most ideal match for Warren Publishing. Kenneth Smith was one of the great stars of illustration art of his day, though his long-standing policy of rarely parting with his originals has made them virtually absent from the marketplace. His original Warren cover paintings, among his most highly regarded works, were finally sold directly by Smith in the early 1990s (we understand he kept one), in response to collector enthusiasm. This is one of those few prizes. It is an exceptional example of Kenneth Smith's cover artistry, and one of only five Warren cover paintings by this very significant artist. Oil on board, 12 x 16 inches, signed lower left. Bright and very clean. On reverse are notations in Kenneth Smith's hand, including his original Connecticut address and phone number, and the date he finished the painting (February 1970). Excellent to Mint. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$3,000. SOLD FOR $1,840.00
