Original Louis Royo Cover Painting for Heavy Metal Magazine (March, 1985)

Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $2,587.50

Offered is an outstanding example of original Heavy Metal Magazine cover art by Louis Royo, the most published cover artist in the history of the magazine. This painting is one of Royo's earliest Heavy Metal covers. Dating from March of 1985, it is his third published work to appear on the cover of Heavy Metal, and one of his most important early covers from an era in which his images literally transformed fantasy illustration, propelling the genre, and Heavy Metal, into the mainstream of American Popular Culture. In this painting, science fiction and fantasy collide with pinup, glamour, and punk fashion, and all significant elements of the Blade Runner esthetic characterizing this cover painting. Theoretically, all of Royo's early works are out there somewhere, but we have never before seen another example of his early groundbreaking Heavy Metal cover paintings available. An outstanding and rare original cover artwork by Royo, the artist who more so than any other is credited with defining the look of Heavy Metal magazine, and influencing the world of modern fantasy and pinup art. The mixed media on board original painting is in flawless Mint condition and measures 14.25 x 20 inches. A copy of the March 1985 edition of Heavy Metal, the magazine on which this work first appeared, accompanies the original artwork. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000. SOLD FOR $2,587.50
