1914 B18 Blankets Collection of 29
Starting Bid - $300.00, Sold For - $1,150.00
These 5-1/4 inch squares of "flannel baseball cards" were issued in 1914, with several popular brands of tobacco. They are referred to as "blankets" because they were to be sewn together to form bed covers, pillowcases, etc. Often overlooked by collectors, B18s are beginning to be recognized by collectors both for their scarcity, and for the exceptional value they represent compared to many other 1910-era baseball tobacco issues. This group of 29 (17 range from Ex to Nr/Mt, balance Vg-Ex or better) includes the following (color refers to pennants, infield, or basepaths, per the Standard Catalog checklist): Stengel Nr/Mt (green), Walter Johnson Nr/Mt (brown), Adams (red), Bassler (purple), Carey Nr/Mt (purple), Coveleski (2 brown), Demmitt (brown), Gandil Nr/Mt (green), Gainor (brown), Gibson (purple and 2 red), Moriarty (brown), Mowrey (purple and red), Miller (purple), O'Toole (2 purple and red), Robinson (purple), Shotton (purple), Steele (yellow), Tyler (brown), Viox (purple and red), Whaling (brown), Williams (red), and Wilson (purple). An impressive group including two key Hall of Famers and numerous scarcities. Total 29 blankets. Reserve $300. Estimate $600/$900. SOLD FOR $1,150.00
