1954 Pee Wee Reese Signed Pro Model Bat
Starting Bid - $1,000.00, Sold For - $1,508.00
Hillerich & Bradsby signature model S100 has been beautifully signed on the sweet spot of the barrel by Pee Wee Reese ("9") in blue Sharpie. The bat exhibits moderate game use including ball, stitch, and cleat marks on the barrel. The cracked handle (approx. 11 inches long running slightly into the center label) has been poorly repaired with glue. A depression runs around the barrel through the barrel stamping. H&B shipping records show that this model was ordered by the Brooklyn Dodgers team on February 26, 1954. In the 1950s the Dodgers would often order bats for the players for team use. The Dodgers ordered this S100 Pee Wee Reese model bat as part of their larger order placed for the team. Players also special-ordered bats direct from H&B. Some collectors make a distinction in value between team-ordered bats and special player-ordered bats, as a player-ordered bat can be placed into a player's hands with a greater degree of certainty, but the practice of the team ordering bats has evolved from the early 1950s to modern times to be the norm. Today all player bats are ordered by the team as opposed to personally by the player. In addition to being signed by Reese, this bat is exceptional in that it can be dated to one of his most impressive seasons during the heart of the glory years of the 1950s. Length: 33 inches. Weight: 32 ounces. SCD Authentic Grade: A4.5. LOAs from Dave Bushing/SCD Authentic, Mike Gutierrez/GAI and James Spence, Steve Grad, John Taube & Vince Malta/PSA DNA. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$3,000. SOLD FOR $1,508.00
