1989 Perez-Steele Celebration Album Original Art (9)
Starting Bid - $2,000.00, Sold For - $2,320.00
Nine exceptional paintings in tribute to nineteenth-century baseball by Dick Perez, each exquisitely framed for museum display, several in extraordinary original nineteenth-century frames. The 1989 Perez-Steele "Celebration" set, commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Baseball Hall of Fame and the 10th anniversary of Perez-Steele Galleries, was issued in the style of the W.S. Kimball set of 1888. The set of cards was housed in a larger box along with an album that was designed in the style of the Allen & Ginter "Album of Worlds Champions" of 1888. Each leaf of the album contained reduced versions of the cards that were set on decoratively illustrated backgrounds. Presented in this lot are eight of the spectacular original paintings used in the album leaf backgrounds. These generic baseball paintings are among the finest ever created by Dick Perez. All are watercolor on board, signed, each measuring 13 x 11 inches. The frames have been chosen with great care and at great expense by Frank Steele and Dick Perez, and are ideally suited for this series of paintings. They range in size from 28 x 22 inches to 23 x 16 inches. Also included is the original artwork to the checklist card for the "Celebration" set, featuring another generic nineteenth-century baseball design, 11.5 x 5 inches, framed to total dimensions of 19.5 x 16 inches, and accompanied by an example of the published checklist card. Total 9 paintings. Due to the size and quantity of framed items, the shipping charges for this lot (depending on where it is sent and method of shipping) may be substantial. Reserve $2,000. $3,000+++. SOLD FOR $2,320.00
