Perez-Steele Galleries Jocko Conlan HOF Postcard Error Archive

Starting Bid - $100.00, Sold For - $232.00

When Jocko Conlan's Perez-Steele Galleries Hall of Fame Postcard was produced in the Fifth Series, the text at the bottom of the reverse of the card read "Jocko Conlan, Umpire, active 1941-1965. Hall of Fame, 1974. Umpired in 5 World Series." Unfortunately, this was in error. Jocko Conlon actually umpired in six World Series, and Mr. Conlon was very unhappy about this error. Presented are several items related to this error: 1) Handwritten note by Jocko Conlon to Hall of Fame President Ed Stack, stamp-dated "Received Jun 18 1982," which reads in part "Dear Ed, If these Perez-Steele folks looked at H of Fame card they would see I worked 6 World Series instead of 5 - and 6 All Star Games...Best Wishes, Jocko Conlon" ("10"). The note was stapled by Conlan to a photocopy of a book page picturing his official Hall of Fame plaque with an arrow pointing to the correct information regarding his career found on the plaque. 2) Autograph letter dated "10/25/86" to Perez-Steele Galleries complaining about the error directly to Perez-Steele Galleries, reading in part: "I prefer my picture on my Hall of Fame card but it should have my Correct Record on it. The enclosed H of F card has it correctly. Why not have your card correct. I'm not happy with your records of me. It's not fair to me. O.K.? Thank you. Jocko Conlan" ("7"). This letter was written with a thick blue felt-tip pen, causing the writing to bleed somewhat. The letter is accompanied by the original mailing envelope, postmarked "25 Oct 1986" addressed to Perez-Steele Galleries in Conlan's hand, and the Hall of Fame plaque enclosure which is refered to in the letter for comparison. This error was apparently a source of constant itrritation for Conlan. He was presented with hundreds of requests to sign his Perez-Steele Hall of Fame Postcard and every time, of course, he was reminded of the error on his card. That is why, on virtually every authentically signed Jocko Conlan Perez-Steele Hall of Fame postcard, there is a numeral "6" at the bottom center of the reverse. Before signing these cards, Conlan would turn over the postcard and put the numeral "6" at the bottom center to correct the error. This lot is accompanied by a Perez-Steele Hall of Fame Postcard signed by Jocko Conlon ("10"). On the reverse, of course, is the corrected number "6" in Conlan's hand. Total 3 signed items. All are in Near Mint condition. From the Collection of Frank and Peggy Steele/Perez-Steele Galleries Archives. LOA from James Spence, Steve Grad & John Reznikoff/PSA DNA. Reserve $100. Estimate $200/$400. SOLD FOR $232.00
