1953 Topps Jackie Robinson Bill Forsyth Baseball Card Painting

Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $6,380.00

"Like the Berra, this is my own rendering of the face - a better one than the card, though I admit to having mixed feelings about not doing a straight copy of the card. I opted for the 'real Robinson' rather than the 'real card.' I remember watching him play at the Polo Grounds in 1954 - I could see, through binoculars, how he concentrated on the game." - Bill Forsyth, 1979. Exhibited: National Portrait Gallery, Washington, D.C. (1981); American Museum of Natural History (1981); Chicago Historical Society (1981); Smithsonian Institute "Champions of American Sport" (1982), National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum (1983, 1985, and 1989); Museum of the Borough of Brooklyn (1987). Acrylic on canvas. Signed in lower right "Forsyth 1976." 24 x 34 inches. Mounted on wood frame backing to total dimensions of 29 x 40 inches. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $6,380.00
