1954 Bowman Max Surkont Bill Forsyth Baseball Card Painting

Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $812.00

"This was one of the first ones I did...It has the character of 17th century Flemish portraits - Memling, for instance. Max didn't look like a ballplayer on this card - or if so, a has-been...The portrait has a universal 'soul' - with the somber, empty Polo Grounds background. My card had all the creases that the painting does. I altered the face slightly, making him look a bit more like a coal miner." - Bill Forsyth, 1979. Acrylic on canvas. Signed in lower right "Forsyth 1976." 22 x 28 inches. Mounted on wood frame backing to total dimensions of 27 x 33 inches. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $812.00
