1926 Knute Rockne Signed Letter Display
Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $2,320.00
This typed letter on University of Notre Dame stationery (8.5 x 11 inches), dated May 12, 1926, is signed by football Hall of Famer Knute Rockne. It is very rare to find Rockne letters with football content written as Notre Dame coach. Refering in the letter to his kicker from the 1913 season, who successfully kicked twenty-eight out of thirty extra points after a touchdown was scored, Rockne notes that one of the two missed kicks was on a very wet day. The letter reads: "Dear Mr. Weyand: I have your letter of May 10 and hasten to reply. In the Fall of 1913 Dorais kicked 28 out of 30 tries for goal after touchdown. One of these he missed was on a very wet day." The letter is beautifully signed "K K Rockne" ("9") in black fountain pen. Immortalized for his famous "Win one for The Gipper" speech, Knute Rockne coached Notre Dame (1918-1930) to five undefeated seasons and six National Championships. He amassed a 28-2 record with Notre Dame during the reign of "The Four Horsemen," the legendary backfield of Stuhldreher, Miller, Crowley and Layden. The letter is beautifully matted and framed, with two non-vintage photographs, to total dimensions of 36 x 23 inches. The frame has a few scratches at top and bottom. The letter is in Excellent to Mint condition with mailing folds. LOAs from Mike Gutierrez/GAI and James Spence & Steve Grad/PSA DNA. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000. SOLD FOR $2,320.00
