Circa 1910 T218, T219 & T220 Champions Complete Sets (3)

Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $2,320.00

Collection of three complete sets (T219 is actually a near-set, missing ten cards) of early twentieth-century Athletes and Prize Fighters issued with Hassan, Mecca, and Honest Long Cut tobacco products. The T218s feature boxers and various champion athletes, while the T219 and T220 issues feature only boxers. All three issues are very similar in design, although the T220s are notably rarer than the other two issues. 1) T218 Complete Set (153 cards): 66% Vg-Ex to Ex and 34% Vg and slightly lesser. Keys: Abe Attell (touches of paper loss on reverse, o/w Vg-Ex), Joe Gans (Vg), Joe Jeannette (Vg), two James Jeffries (both Vg), two Jack Johnson (both with possible slight trim, otherwise Vg), Stanley Ketchell (Vg), Sam Langford (Vg). 2) T219 Near-Complete Set (40 cards of 50 in set): 90% Vg or better, 10% slightly lesser. Keys: Abe Attell (Gd), James Jeffries (Vg), Stanley Ketchell (Fr-Gd), and Battling Nelson (Vg). The missing ten cards for completion are as follows: Jeanette, Johnson, Keyes, Klaus, Langford, Moran, Murphy, Neil, Welsh, and West. 3) T220 Complete Set (50 cards): 72% Vg-Ex to Ex and 28% Vg and slightly lesser. Keys: James Corbett (Vg), Jack Dempsey (possible slight trim, o/w Ex), George Dixon (Gd-Vg), Bob Fitzsimmons (Vg-Ex), Joe Gans (ink on the back, o/w Vg-Ex), Sullivan/Kilrain (Vg), Jeffries/Sharkey (Vg-Ex), Peter Jackson (Ex), and John Sullivan (Vg-Ex). Compared to baseball cards of the era, these early boxing cards, which are at least as scarce, represent a particularly outstanding value. This is an extremely attractive and fairly comprehensive collection comprised of three of the most classic boxing tobacco-related sets from the early twentieth century. Total 243 cards. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000. SOLD FOR $2,320.00
