1956 Adventure Gum Collection Including Two Complete Sets (389 cards)

Starting Bid - $400.00, Sold For - $1,276.00

Two complete 100-card sets of 1956 Adventure Gum, plus a third set missing only key card #86 Schmeling, plus an additional 90 assorted cards (62 different). This unusual and scarce issue includes a wide variety of sport and non-sport subjects, with a particular focus on famous boxing champions. The key card in the set, the controversial #86 Max Schmeling, has always been rumored to have been pulled from the set early in distribution due to the swastika which appears in the background. Though this story has never been confirmed, Schmeling is the only rare card in the set, and many sets are offered without the Schmeling card, suggesting that it is true. The sets grade Nr/Mt or better throughout, with the two Max Schmeling cards downgraded slightly to Ex-Mt due to the typical centering problems associated with the set. The two complete sets and one near-set (99 cards) are obviously uncirculated cards, fresh from vending. Many years ago a quantity of Adventure Gum vending surfaced. Most extremely high-grade examples and sets of this issue originate from this find. The remaining cards range from Vg to Nr/Mt, averaging Ex overall. Two complete sets, one set minus one, and 90 assorted duplicates. From the Macaluso Collection. Total 389 cards. Reserve $400. Estimate $800/$1,200. SOLD FOR $1,276.00
