1939 Charles Atlas Signed Letter
Starting Bid - $100.00, Sold For - $232.00
You couldn't read a comic book and not be inspired by ads featuring the 98-pound weakling getting sand kicked in his face, then exercising, and coming back as The Hulk! Presented is a fine typewritten letter signed by Charles Atlas on his personal letterhead (8.5 x 11 inches) featuring a full-length photo of the famed body building guru. Dated Oct. 18, 1939. The one-page letter is addressed to Thomas Kempton of Central Falls, Rhode Island. Atlas thanks Kempton for his letter and adds: "...This is to acknowledge receipt of your payment of $2.50 making your account paid in full. I am pleased to learn that you are getting along nicely with your exercises. Keep up the good work and I am confident you will obtain the best of results and develop a good strong and healthy body which will serve you well throughout a long life. Put lots of pep and power into your exercises, and you will be amazed at the results you will obtain. Try to do about 150 dips a day in groups of 10 to 25. Write to me from time to time Mr. Kempton, and let me know of your further progress, as I am anxious to know how you are getting along." Boldly signed "Charles Atlas" ("10") with the closing "Yours for Health and Strength." The ornate letterhead bears the heading: "Private Office Charles Atlas 115 East 23rd Street New York City" with the subheading: "founder of the Fastest health, Strength and Physique Building System." Beneath his photo it is noted that Atlas is the "Holder of the title: 'World's Most Perfectly Developed Man." Charles Atlas (Angelo Siciliano, 1893-1972) was born in Southern Italy. In 1922, "Physical Culture" selected Atlas as the world's most perfectly developed man. The title and prize money helped him set up a mail-order muscle-building business that advertised in every comic book for generations. The letter is accompanied by its original mailing envelope. Near Mint condition. LOA from James Spence, Steve Grad & John Reznikoff/PSA DNA. Reserve $100. Estimate $200/$300. SOLD FOR $232.00
