1963 John F. Kennedy Single-Signed Baseball Signed In Costa Rica
Starting Bid - $5,000.00, Sold For - $37,700.00
Official American League (Cronin) baseball is single-signed by John F. Kennedy ("8/9") on the sweet spot in blue ink. This ball was signed in March 1963, when JFK, Secretary of State Dean Rusk, and the Presidential entourage traveled to Costa Rica for a Central American summit. During the trip, JFK met with a local Little League baseball team and signed baseballs for some of the youngsters. This is one of those balls. The ball is accompanied by a photograph of Kennedy meeting with the youngsters. In the photo he is actually signing a baseball. This ball was saved by Miguel Garcia. Both Miguel and his brother Carlos were on the team, and at the time each received a signed ball. According to accompanying documents, the Garcia family was friendly with Secretary of State Dean Rusk, and the brothers maintained contact with Rusk for many years. The ball is accompanied by a 1986 letter from Dean Rusk to Miguel Garcia in which he is responding to his request for a letter of recommendation, as well as a letter from Miguel Garcia detailing how he came to receive the ball. The ball is accompanied by a 1996 letter fax from legendary handwriting expert and Kennedy specialist Charles Hamilton which reads "I certify that the official American League baseball bears an authentic, original signature of John Kennedy written by the president while on a state visit to Costa Rica." Charles Hamilton is widely recognized as the undisputed master and father of modern handwriting analysis, and is the author of the definitive book devoted exclusively to Kennedy's signature and handwriting. The ball is also accompanied by a letter of authenticity from the Director of the APIC Kennedy Chapter (KPIC), renowned Kennedy expert Harvey Goldberg. This institution is now in its 25th year of specializing exclusively in the research, documentation, and authentication of Kennedy related materials. According to their extensive research, it is very likely that this ball was signed on March 19, 1963 at the El Bosque Housing Project. It is interesting to note that the KPIC research states that the dress of one of the gentleman in the photograph suggests that he is a Costa Rican priest who was very likely also the coach of the team. This is a tremendous example of a John F. Kennedy single-signed ball, and incredibly represents one of only three examples which Robert Edward Auctions has offered during the past 30+ years. Nr/Mt condition. Reserve $5,000. Estimate $10,000/$20,000. SOLD FOR $37,700.00
