1956 John F. Kennedy Signed Letter
Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $2,088.00
John F. Kennedy one-page TLS on United States Senate stationery is an extraordinary Kennedy letter because it references his just-released Pulizer Prize-winning book Profiles In Courage. The book, written by Kennedy as a freshman U.S. Senator in 1954-55, profiles eight of his historical senatorial colleagues, such men as John Quincy Adams, Sam Houston, and Robert A. Taft. Instead of focusing on their storied careers, in this famous book John F. Kennedy chose to illustrate their acts of integrity, when they stood alone against tremendous political and social pressure for what they felt was right. In this letter, Kennedy thanks Mrs. C. B. Beyer, who, as the letter states, is the granddaughter of Edmund Ross, one of Kennedy's subjects in the book. The letter, dated April 17, 1956 reads: Dear Mrs. Beyer: Many thanks for your letter of recent date. I appreciate your good wishes and your generous comments on my recent book "Profiles in Courage." I certainly appreciate your writing me and especially since you are the granddaughter of Edmund G. Ross, and a distant cousin of William Pitt Fessenden. I enjoyed your descriptions concerning your relationship with Mr. Fessenden and your fond memories of your grandfather Mr. Ross. They were indeed very interesting. Thanks again for your letter and for the pleasure it has brought me. Sincerely yours, John F. Kennedy. Below his signature is an additional inscription in Kennedy's hand reading "many many thanks." The virtually flawless blue ink signature and inscription grade a "9/10" overall. The U.S. Senate stationery page has two horizontal mailing fold lines and a tiny corner crease in the upper right, otherwise in Near Mint condition. Accompanied by the original franked mailing envelope (Ex), which features Kennedy's facsimile signature in place of the stamp and a preprinted return address reading United States Senate Committee on Labor and Public Welfare. Total 2 items (letter and envelope). LOA from James Spence, Steve Grad & John Reznikoff/PSA DNA. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$1,500. SOLD FOR $2,088.00
