Circa 1863 Civil War Era Autograph Book of 211 Signatures Including Abraham Lincoln
Starting Bid - $5,000.00, Sold For - $8,120.00
Civil War autograph album of 211 signatures with four U.S. Presidents including Abraham Lincoln, Andrew Johnson, Andrew Jackson and then General of the Union Army, U.S. Grant. Included are many other important political and military figures. This is an extraordinary Civil War-era autograph album, containing a fabulous assemblage of signatures, most of which appear to have been collected at the height of the Civil War in 1863. The book, measuring 5.5 x 8.25 inches, consists of 72 neatly disbound pages plus leather covers. Enhancing the presentation possibilities is the fact that the signatures are written or affixed to just one side of each page. The book comprises a "who's who" of Washington in 1863 and includes the signatures of Abraham Lincoln, signed "A. Lincoln," above that of his then Vice President Hannibal Hamlin, signed "H. Hamlin, Maine," alone together on a single page. Approximately 175 signatures are handwritten on the album pages. Thirty-six signatures, including several of the more important personages, are "cuts" pasted into the album including: "Old Hickory" Andrew Jackson, a franking signature "Free Andrew Jackson" on the portion of an envelope with a notation in another hand "the Genl's frank on a letter to chief Justice Taney"; Andrew Johnson; Louis Moreau Gottschalk (yes, the composer!), an extremely rare signature dated Mar 6, 1864; Ulysses S. Grant, "U.S. Grant Maj. Gen. U.S.A. Dec. 6th /63"; George Meade, signature with rank, "Geo. G Meade Majl Genl. of Vols Camdr. A.P." on a 4" x 3" card; William T. Sherman, signature with rank as Major General; George McClellan, signature "Geo McClellan Maj Gen USA" dated Nov. 20, 1863; George H. Thomas, signature with rank; Winfield Scott Hancock, signature with rank removed from a letter; Ambrose Burnside, signature on a small slip adding rank and dated Annapolis, April, 12, 1864; William S. Rosecrans, signature with rank; Quincy Adams Gilmore, signature with rank and sentiment, dated Folly Island, S.C., Nov. 27, 1863; John A. Dix, signature with rank as Major General; Darius Couch; Robert Schenck; George Marston, signature with rank; Samuel P. Heinzelman, signature with rank; Lincoln's first Secretary of War, Simon Cameron, signature with closing removed from a letter; David Henshaw, signature as "Collector." The balance of the signatures (approximately 175) are written directly onto the pages and include such luminaries as Henry Halleck, signed with rank as "Genl. in chief" dated Jan 30, 1864; Salmon P. Chase, dated Feb. 20, 1864; Daniel Sickles; Oakes Ames; Gideon Welles, dated 1864; Charles Sumner; William H. Seward; and Reverdy Johnson. The book also includes numerous senators and congressmen from this pivotal era in American history. All signatures, including that of Abraham Lincoln, are virtually flawless ("9" to "10"), having been perfectly preserved within the confines of the album, protected from light and all elements. This is a remarkable collection of signatures, far more advanced than typically found for such albums, assembled at the height of the Civil War. As noted, pages are neatly disbound. Pages browned at extreme edges, otherwise interior pages are bright and clean, in Very Good to Excellent condition. LOA from James Spence, Steve Grad & John Reznikoff/PSA DNA. Reserve $5,000. Estimate $10,000/$15,000. SOLD FOR $8,120.00
