1888 N403 Yum Yum Tobacco Billy Sunday

Starting Bid - $800.00, Sold For - $3,190.00

Graded VG 40 by SGC. Extremely rare sample card from the Yum Yum Tobacco series of 1888 features an extraordinarily bold "in action" woodcut of legendary ballplayer-turned-evangelist Billy Sunday (fielding), right fielder, with the Pittsburgh Nationals. 1888 was Sunday's first season with Pittsburgh, having spent his entire Major League career up to that season as backup outfielder with the powerhouse Chicago Nationals. This is a magnificent example from this rare issue of one of the nineteenth century's most well known players. Advanced collectors have appreciated the mystique of the rarest pre-1900 baseball card issues for decades. And whether it is because of the brand name, their unusual look, extreme rarity, or a combination of these factors, few card issues cause the stir that Yum Yum Tobacco cards do among the most serious die-hard collectors. This is a great looking card, with a little wear to the corners, a slightly darkened area along the extreme right border, two very tiny, light surface wrinkles, and a clean reverse. In extremely pleasing Very Good condition. Reserve $800. Estimate $1,500/$2,500. SOLD FOR $3,190.00
