Thomas Edison Original Photograph, Cut Signature & Phonograph
Starting Bid - $400.00, Sold For - $1,276.00
This lot features not only an extremely rare and high-quality presentation photograph (13 x 9.5 inches) and signature of inventor Thomas Edison, but also an original Edison Phonograph. Both a scientist and inventor, Thomas Edison is best known as the mind behind the incandescent electric light bulb, the phonograph and kinetoscope (for viewing moving films). In this magnificent photograph (copyright 1906) the "Wizard of Menlo Park" is seen at his famous rolltop desk using his Edison Business Phonograph, a precursor to the modern dictation recorder. Matted beneath the photograph is a fine example of Edison's signature on a small slip of paper, reading "To the New York Office/Thomas A. Edison" ("9") in black ink. The signature is bold and clear, with the only imperfection being a small scratch in the "o" of Edison. The paper is slightly toned with age, but this does not detract from the clarity and legibility of the signature. The accompanying Edison Phonograph is ideal for display, and looks very similar to the machine Edison is using in the photograph. The most recent patent date on the phonograph is 1898. The phonograph is accompanied by its original rounded wooden top and horn, and comes complete with four original Edison record rolls that feature music from the turn of the century. The photograph and signature, which are matted and framed together to dimensions of 18.5" x 17", and the phonograph each make for a fascinating display separately. Together, the framed display and the phonograph create an even more interesting and substantial presentation. The phonograph is in Excellent condition. The photograph is an extremely high-quality and detailed professional study, with flawless contrast and in Near Mint condition. LOA from James Spence, Steve Grad & John Reznikoff/PSA DNA.
