1932 The Mummy Original Movie Still
Starting Bid - $200.00, Sold For - $580.00
"The Boris Karloff movie still of all Boris Karloff movie stills," featuring the single most famous and reproduced of all Karloff images. This is an original movie promotional still issued in 1932 featuring the image upon which the movie poster for The Mummy, collecting's most valuable movie poster, was based. The Mummy was Boris Karloff's second starring role in a Universal horror film, following on the heels of his phenomenal success in Frankenstein. In this horror classic, Karloff stars as the Egyptian high priest Imhotep, who comes back to life after thousands of years when his tomb is disturbed. The masterful makeup skills of Jack Pierce gave us great images of Karloff as the moldy-shrouded mummy. The original black-and-white promotional photograph measures 8 x 10 inches and features Karloff as "The Mummy" lying in his tomb with arms crossed on his chest. This image was used both for posters (which hung in the theaters) as well as in the marketing advertisements for the film. Along the bottom of the reverse of the photo is small type which reads, "Karloff as 'The Mummy' in Universal's occult reincarnation drama." Condition flaws include a corner chip in the lower right, and a few creases, but with flawless contrast and tremendous visual appeal. Extremely rare, with just a handful of examples known, and approximately $400,000 cheaper than an original one-sheet poster featuring this same image. Reserve $200. Estimate $400/$600. SOLD FOR $580.00
