1954 Yankees Wives Photo Signed By Marliyn Monroe

Starting Bid - $800.00, Sold For - $2,204.00

Magnificent 1954 original matte-finnish photograph (8 x 10 inches) of Marilyn Monroe posing with the other Yankee wives, taken during her brief marriage to Joe DiMaggio, beautifully signed and inscribed by Marilyn Monroe. The inscription in black fountain pen reads, "Germaine, Hurry and get well too will pray for you, Love, Marilyn" ("8"). The photograph was signed for one of the Yankee wives who was sick and could not attend the charity event at which this photograph was taken. The informal signature is very unusual and may be simply because Gertrude was a very good friend of the new Mrs. DiMaggio. It is very interesting to note, however, that Marilyn rarely signed with just her first name. In fact, this is the only photograph we have ever seen signed in this manner. Though it is speculation on our part, a likely explanation for this is the fact that she was very recently married at this time, and was previously used to signing only as "Marilyn Monroe," as opposed to her new name, "Marilyn Monroe DiMaggio." This, combined with the connection of the photograph and the recipient to the Yankees, and hence also to her new husband (and his last name, DiMaggio), may have contributed to her choice to simply sign "Marilyn." It is inscribed and signed with a flourish across her body, with the white of her dress providing excellent contrast. The photograph has flawless contrast and is in Excellent to Mint condition. This is an extraordinary and unique signed photograph of the world's greatest sex symbol, the legendary Marilyn Monroe, at the peak of her fame, enjoying herself as "just one the girls" with the Yankee wives. Even in this casual setting, Marilyn's star quality shines. Beautifully presented in a museum-quality framed display with red velvet matting and gilt border. A matted brass plaque below reads: "Original Autograph - Marilyn Monroe." Dimensions: 14 x 19 inches. LOA from James Spence, Steve Grad & John Reznikoff/PSA DNA. Reserve $800. Estimate $1,500/$2,500. SOLD FOR $2,204.00
