1933 Greta Garbo Signed Letter to MGM

Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $1,972.00

Greta Garbo typed signed letter to MGM Studios, dated August 14, 1933, discussing details relating to her 1932 contract with MGM. The letter reads in part, "Gentlemen: You have heretofore received notice that the contract of July 7, 1932, between Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Corporation...has been assumed by Greta Garbo...Please deposit future installments to the savings account of Greta Garbo...Thank you for your courtesy in the matter. Yours truly," and is beautifully signed below "Greta Garbo" ("9" ) in black fountain pen. The signature is particularly large and an ideal example from the hand of the legendary screen goddess. One of early Hollywood's most famous actresses and four-time Oscar nominee during the 1930s, Garbo stunned the film community with her sudden retirement in 1941. From then until her passing in 1990 the Great Garbo lived in seclusion, shunning all photo, interview and signature requests. In fact, during her lifetime Garbo-signed items were so rare that fans often searched her garbage for examples, and her signature became widely recognized as the rarest and most valuable of all living persons. It is only since her death that a small number of signed pieces from her estate have found their way into the collecting world. The offered letter provides an ideal signature example of the enigmatic star dating from the peak of her fame, on a letter directly relating to her career and dealings with the studio. Matted with an informational engraved plaque and a portrait of Garbo in the title role of Queen Christina, the only character she portrayed in 1933. Museum-quality framed to total dimensions of 32 x 17.5 inches. Near Mint condition. LOA from James Spence, Steve Grad & John Reznikoff/PSA DNA. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000. SOLD FOR $1,972.00
