1936 R144 Strange True Stories Near Set (23/24) Plus Wrapper

Starting Bid - $300.00, Sold For - $3,480.00

Issued by Wolverine Gum, "Strange True Stories" is one of the most outrageous non-sport sets ever issued. Cards are devoted to strange and, well, pretty horrifying stories, especially for children, with fairly gruesome artwork. Our kind of set! With titles such as "Drowned by a Giant Clam," "Death in the Sahara," "Murder in the Depths," most cards were capable of providing nightmares. While each card advertises that the set contains 260 cards, unfortunately only the first series of 24 was ever produced. In addition to its rather unique subject matter, "Strange True Stories" is also one of the rarest gum card sets of the 1930s. Presented are 23 different cards, representing a complete set minus just one card (#24) for completion. Very attractive mixed-grade near-complete set of this extremely rare, colorful and very unusual 1930s set issued by Wolverine Gum. Eight cards grade Vg-Ex, 10 Vg, 4 Gd and 1 Pr-Fr. Wolverine Gum of Detroit apparently had a fascination with the bizarre, as its only other card set was its Ripley's "Believe It or Not" issue. Both Wolverine sets are among the most popular of all 1930s issues. Accompanying the (near) set is an original "Strange True Stories" wrapper (Vg due to a couple of small tears with very minor paper loss, otherwise displays as Ex). This beautiful wrapper, the first we have ever offered, is one of the great rarities of non-sport wrapper collecting. Total 23 cards plus one wrapper. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000. SOLD FOR $3,480.00
