1936 R39 National Chicle Dare Devils John Dillinger Original Artwork

Starting Bid - $400.00, Sold For - $4,060.00

Actual original artwork to card #14, entitled "Dillinger and His Gang Make Their Getaway" from the 1936 "Dare Devils" set issued by National Chicle. All gum card artwork from the 1930s is extremely rare. In fact, for most sets of the era there exists not a single surviving example. The general rule of thumb is either there are many original artworks in existence from a given issue, or none. When the archives of National Chicle were discovered about twenty-five years ago, included were several dozen baseball artworks, approximately thirty National Chicle Star Football artworks, over fifty Sky Bird artworks, and approximately 20 Dare Devil artworks. These artworks have long been scattered to the four corners of the collecting world. The offered original artwork is a particularly choice example from this classic 1930s non-sport set, both because of the exceptional quality of the artwork, and the subject matter. This card, in true 1930s fashion, glorifies the daring escape from the arm of the law of "Public Enemy No. 1," John Dillinger, who surrounded by twenty-seven agents, shot and killed two G-men at the "Little Bohemia" roadhouse near Rhinelander, Wisconsin, on April 22, 1934, and miraculously escaped. The artwork is bright, crisp, and clean, and is an ideal example of original art from this popular set, with exceptional detail, originating from one of card collecting's most significant finds. Dimensions: 4.5 x 5.5 inches. In Near Mint condition. Reserve $400. Estimate $800/$1,200. SOLD FOR $4,060.00
